A large vintage gold-toned sunburst wall/ceiling light, broadly dating to the 1950s–1960s. Alternating slender rods and embossed lance-shaped rays radiate around a shallow domed centre, turning the light into a sculptural burst of metal.

DESCRIPTION

The composition builds its visual rhythm through two contrasting forms: long, narrow rods create a fine linear corona, while broader pointed rays introduce texture and weight. Their alternating lengths keep the outline lively and irregular rather than mechanically symmetrical.

A softly modelled central dome projects forward from the rays. Its textured gold-toned surface catches and scatters the light, while the darker patina within the embossed rays gives the radial pattern additional depth.

When illuminated, the lamp acquires a warmer and more theatrical presence. Reflected light travels across the uneven central surface and reinforces the contrast between the rounded dome and the sharp, graphic rays surrounding it.

DESIGN / MAKER / HISTORY

Sunburst forms became a recurring feature of post-war decorative design, translating the image of the radiating sun into mirrors, clocks and lighting. Here, the motif is treated as both an illuminated object and a piece of sculptural wall decoration.

The construction, aged finish, embossed metalwork and decorative language support an approximate date of c. 1950s–1960s. This is a reasoned dating rather than a documented manufacturing year. No maker, designer or country of manufacture has been identified.

CONDITION

Good vintage condition. The central dome, suspension ring and radiating metal elements are firm, and no rays are missing.
