Pair of 1950s Graewe Opaline Glass Table Lamps

A matching pair of vintage Graewe table lamps, made in Germany during the 1950s.

Their compact sculptural forms combine clear pressed glass, softly ribbed opaline shades and restrained red detailing, creating a distinctive example of decorative German lighting from the mid-century period.

Description

Each lamp has a rounded opaline glass shade with vertical ribbing, designed to soften and diffuse the light.

Below the shade, a moulded clear-glass section continues the decorative rhythm, while the substantial stepped base is finished with concentric white and red bands. The contrast between transparent glass, opaque white surfaces and narrow red accents gives the lamps a strong graphic character.

Despite their modest dimensions, the lamps have a substantial and well-balanced presence.

These lamps reflect the decorative approach found in some German domestic lighting of the 1950s, when traditional moulded-glass techniques were combined with clearer forms and stronger colour contrasts.
