Vintage Richter Electric Sunburst Wall Clock, Germany, c. 1960s
An original 1960s Richter Electric sunburst wall clock from Germany, combining a dark brushed-metal dial with alternating textured and brass-toned rays.
The original electric mechanism has been replaced with a German Junghans quartz movement, allowing the clock to retain its authentic period appearance while offering convenient battery-powered timekeeping.
The piece
This striking vintage wall clock was produced by Richter Electric in Germany during the 1960s.
Its circular dark metal dial is surrounded by an exuberant arrangement of radiating metal rods. Shorter textured rays alternate with longer brass-toned elements, creating the dynamic sunburst silhouette closely associated with Atomic Age and Mid-Century Modern interiors.
Fine incised lines radiate from the centre of the dial, while the broad tapered hands provide a strong geometric counterpoint to the delicate outer structure. The original Richter Electric name remains visible on the face.
Although the dial still proudly announces its electric origins, the original mechanism has since been replaced with a German Junghans quartz movement operated by a single AA battery. The change preserves the clock’s vintage character while making rather fewer demands on modern walls.
Where it works best
A natural focal point for a living room, dining room, hallway, study or home office.
Its graphic form works particularly well in Mid-Century Modern, Atomic Age, Space Age and eclectic interiors, whether displayed as a functional clock or as a sculptural piece of wall decoration.
